Turn one kitchen tool into a whole patch of googly-eyed carrots in about 20 minutes! This easy stamping craft pairs perfectly with a read-aloud of Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds and Peter Brown, and it’s a hit with wiggly hands of every age. By the end, your kids will have their very own crew of watchful, wide-eyed carrots ready to spook (in the friendliest way!)
Craft Supplies:
Gather these supplies before you start so little helpers don’t have to wait:
- Orange paint (washable is best for young crafters)
- A pie server or cake server (this is your carrot stamp)
- Thick cardstock paper (one sheet per child)
- Googly eyes in a mix of sizes
- Green markers
- Glue (a glue stick or white school glue both work)
- A paper plate or shallow tray for the paint
- Halloween stickers
- Table cover to protect your surface
Directions:
Follow these steps in order and you’ll have a spooky carrot patch in no time.
1. Set up your paint station.
Squeeze a generous puddle of orange paint onto a paper plate. Spread it out just wide enough to coat the flat blade of your pie server.
2. Dip the pie server.
Press the flat metal blade of the pie server into the paint until it’s evenly coated. The triangle-ish shape of the blade is exactly what gives you that perfect carrot silhouette.
3. Stamp the carrots.
Press the painted blade firmly onto the cardstock, then lift straight up. Repeat to make three to four carrots, arranged in a random design.
4. Let the paint dry.
Give the carrots 5–10 minutes to dry before decorating. This keeps the googly eyes from sliding around in wet paint.
5. Glue on the googly eyes.
Add two googly eyes to each carrot. Mix up the sizes for maximum creepiness – one big eye and one small eye per carrot looks especially funny and matches the book’s playful style.
6. Draw the green stems.
Use a green marker to add a few short lines at the top of each carrot for leafy stems. A cluster of two or three lines does the trick.
7. Decorate with bats and spiders.
Glue the black bat cutouts around the carrots and press spider stickers wherever you like. Scatter them for that “something’s watching you” Halloween feel.
8. Show off your creepy crew.
Let everything dry completely, then hold it up. Those carrots are officially watching you back!
