A blue card features two egg shapes made from white paper and yellow sponges with googly eyes and smiles. Surrounding text reads You crack me up! This is one of the cutest Sponge Painting Ideas for Kids, with red yarn hearts and a green sponge nearby.

This sponge painted egg card is a cute and easy craft kids can make with simple supplies. By the end, children will have a bright blue handmade card featuring a happy fried egg, a textured yellow yolk, googly eyes, gold hearts, and the sweet punny message!

This beginner-friendly project works well at home, in the classroom, or at a daycare table. It’s playful, punny, and perfect for little hands to recreate!

Craft Supplies:

  • Bright blue cardstock or construction paper
  • White cardstock or construction paper
  • Yellow craft paint
  • Small piece of sponge
  • Googly eyes
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue stick or school glue
  • Paper plate or paint tray

Directions:

1. Prepare the Card Base

  • If turning this into a card, fold a piece of bright blue cardstock in half. Press along the fold to make a clean crease. This will be the background for the fried egg design.

2. Cut Out the Egg White Shape

  • Draw a wiggly fried egg shape on white paper. It does not need to be perfect. In fact, an uneven shape makes it look more like a real fried egg.
  • Cut out the shape with scissors. For younger children, an adult can draw and cut the egg white ahead of time.

3. Sponge Paint the Yellow Yolk

  • Pour a small amount of yellow paint onto a paper plate.
  • Dip the sponge lightly into the paint. Dab it in the center of the white egg shape to create a round yellow yolk.
  • Encourage kids to use gentle up-and-down tapping motions instead of rubbing. This gives the yolk a fun, bumpy texture.

4. Let the Paint Dry

  • Set the egg piece aside until the yellow paint is dry. Drying time will depend on how much paint was used. A thin layer may dry in 10–20 minutes.

5. Glue the Egg to the Card

  • Add glue to the back of the white egg shape.
  • Place it in the center of the blue card. Press gently so it sticks flat.

6. Add Googly Eyes and a Smile

  • Glue two googly eyes onto the yellow yolk.
  • Use a black marker to draw a simple smile under the eyes. Kids can make the face silly, sweet, or extra cheerful.

7. Write your Message

  • Use a black marker to write the message on the card:
  • “You crack me up!”
  • “You are an egg-cellent mommy!”
  • “You are an egg-cellent dad!”
  • “You are egg-stra special!”

8. Embellish & Gift

  • Add any other embellishments you see fit and allow it to dry completely before you gift it away!
