A handprint snail craft made with a red paper hand, brown body, coffee filter shell with glitter, googly eyes, glue bottle, seashells, and ocean-themed background. Text @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS is at the bottom.

Summer means sunshine, beach trips, and plenty of time for creative crafting at home. If you want a fun, ocean-themed activity to keep little hands busy, this coffee filter hermit crab craft is the perfect solution. You will learn how to transform simple household supplies into an adorable, colorful sea creature.

This project combines sensory play with fine motor skill development. Kids get to trace their hands, squeeze glitter glue, and design their very own crab shell. Plus, handprint crafts double as precious keepsakes that you can save long after summer ends.

Craft Supplies:

You probably already have most of these supplies in your craft closet or kitchen pantry. Gather the following items to get started:

  • White Coffee Filters – one per craft
  • Cardstock Paper {red, blue and brown}
  • School Glue
  • Glitter Glue
  • Loose Craft Glitter
  • Googly Eyes – two per craft
  • Black Marker
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Embellishments

Directions:

  1. Start by building the beach scene. Take your light blue cardstock and lay it vertically. Cut a strip of tan or brown cardstock to represent the sandy ocean floor.
  2. Use your liquid glue to secure the tan paper to the bottom third of the blue paper. Smooth it out and let it dry for a few minutes.
  3. Grab your red cardstock and a pencil. Gently trace your child’s hand on the paper.
  4. Use your scissors to cut out the handprint carefully. This red handprint will serve as the body and legs of your hermit crab. When you place it on the background, position it so the thumb points up (this becomes the head) and the fingers point out to the side (these become the little crab legs).
  5. Now for the fun part! Flatten out a white coffee filter on your workspace. Take your brown or copper glitter glue and draw a large spiral starting from the center of the filter and winding outward. While the glitter glue is still wet, sprinkle your colorful sequins and extra glitter along the spiral line.
  6. Set the coffee filter aside to dry completely.
  7. Once the shell is dry, it is time to assemble the masterpiece. Glue the red handprint onto your beach background, right where the sand meets the water.
  8. Next, apply a generous circle of glue to the back of the decorated coffee filter.
  9. Press it firmly over the “palm” section of the red handprint.
  10. To finish your crab, use a black marker to draw two short lines extending up from the thumb area of the handprint. Glue a googly eye to the top of each black line.
  11. Add any other embellishments you see fit. Once done, allow it to dry completely before you display it proudly for all to see!
