Crafting is a fun way to spark creativity while teaching children about the significance of certain holidays. On that note, Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
The red poppy flower has become an enduring symbol of this commemoration. With this torn paper poppy flower craft, kids can engage in a meaningful activity while understanding the importance of Memorial Day.
Craft Supplies:
One of the great things about this craft is that it requires only simple and affordable materials, most of which you might already have at home or in the classroom.
- Red Construction Paper
- Black Construction Paper
- White Cardstock Paper
- Poppy Flower Printable – on our landing page
- School Glue
- Black Puffy Paint
- Embellishments
Directions:
Start by preparing a clean and organized workspace. Lay out all the materials so the kids can easily access them. This makes our torn paper poppy flower activity more manageable, especially if you’re working with a group.
- First things first – download and print out the FREE provided poppy flower printable listed above, on a single piece of white cardstock paper.
- Next up, help your child cut/tear their RED construction paper into small pieces.
- Now have them use school glue to glue those pieces inside the poppy flower design in the printable. Remind the kids that the goal isn’t perfection—it’s about having fun and creating something that’s entirely their own.
- The final step is to have kids add a small black circle cutout to the center, as well as using the black puffy paint to add some “dimension” to the flower.
- Allow the paper pieces to dry completely.
- Once finished, these poppy flowers deserve the spotlight! If you’re in a classroom, dedicate a space on your bulletin board or wall to showcase the students’ work.
- Be sure to also snap a photo and share it with the hashtag #GluedToMyCrafts or tag us to showcase their blooming artwork. We’d love to see what you create!
