To complete this “Read Across America” keepsake, all you need to do is download our free file, print it out and have kids decorate it however they like! I did “red thumbprints” for the stripes on my example image, but the nice thing about this craft is that there is no real rules to it! You could also add glitter, more patterns, or any extra decorations your child wants to make their ornament unique.

Then when they are done, help them trim it out and laminate it with their photo inside. Punch a small hole near the top of the hat. Thread a piece of string or ribbon through the hole and knot it to create your ornament hanger.

Be sure to also write your child’s name and the year on the back of the ornament with a marker—it will make a lovely keepsake for years to come. And that’s it – easy peasy fun!
