Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for kids to get creative! Whether it’s making cards for classmates or cute crafts to decorate your home, the season is all about spreading love and fun. One delightful DIY that kids are sure to love is the “Day It Rained Hearts” craft.

Inspired by Felicia Bond’s charming book “The Day It Rained Hearts”, this paper plate and cotton ball project is simple, budget-friendly, and a great way to celebrate the spirit of Valentine’s Day.

This easy paper plate and cotton ball craft is not just fun but also sparks imagination and storytelling. It’s the perfect activity to engage your little ones during the Valentine’s season, and the end result can double as adorable décor or a keepsake.

Craft Supplies:

One of the best things about this craft? You probably already have most of the supplies at home! Here’s what you’ll want to gather:

  • Large Paper Plate
  • Blue Cardstock Paper
  • School Glue
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Large White Cotton Balls
  • Heart Stickers

Feel free to adapt this list based on what is readily available at home or in your classroom. Creativity works wonders even with limited materials!

Directions:

  1. First cut your paper plate in half. Straight up the center to make TWO equal pieces.
  2. Reserve one half for today’s craft and save the other for another day.
  3. Now cut several long stripes from the remaining blue cardstock paper, for the “rain” in the craft. These can be as long/short as you like and you have any many or little as you want too!
  4. Staple these strips to the back of the paper plate half.
  5. Now grab your school glue and cotton balls.
  6. Put a good layer of glue down on the paper plate half and then have children place the cotton balls on top, until it’s completely covered.
  7. To finish off the rain themed Valentine’s Day craft, add the heart stickers {in various spots} on the paper strips that are coming out from the “cloud.” This will give the look of it “raining” hearts.
  8. Then add other embellishments you see fit and allow it to dry completely, before displaying it proudly for all to see.
