While terra cotta pots are simple, clay containers perfect for plants, with a little paint and creativity they can transform into so much more!

Two small terra cotta pot unicorns, each painted with closed eyes, gold horns, and colorful flower crowns, are filled with polka-dot tissue paper. Set against a pastel background. Text reads: terra cotta pot UNICORNS.

Who said flower pots have to be plain and boring? Not me! I love taking ordinary objects and making them extra special with a fun design. My latest project was turning a basic terra cotta pot into an enchanting unicorn planter.

Just when you thought planters couldn’t get any more magical, I found a way to add glitter, rainbows and even a flowing mane and horn. Now instead of just housing green leaves and stems, this pot is a showstopping home decor piece that sparks imagination.

In this blog post, I’ll share the simple steps I took to transform my terra cotta pot from dull to dazzling and inspire you to put your own whimsical spin on pots too. Get ready to release your inner artist and unicorn lover!

Whether it’s crafting together as a family or giving these adorable unicorns away, this painted planter project is a great way for moms, teachers, educators and creative geniuses alike to get creative and explore their inner artist!

Craft Supplies:

  • Terra Cotta Pots – 1 per craft
  • White Craft Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper Plate
  • Colored Cardstock Paper
  • Gold Scrapbook Paper
  • Paper Flower Punches
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Sticks
  • Black Marker
  • Scissors
  • Small Rhinestones
  • Tissue Paper

Directions:

  • First turn your terra cotta pot upside down on a paper plate. Have your child paint their pot completely white {or however they like!}
  • Once done, set aside to let it dry completely.
  • While the paint is drying, trim out/use paper punches to make flowers for the unicorn’s hair.
  • Add rhinestones to the centers.
  • Don’t forget to cut out a triangle horn from the gold scrapbook paper!
  • Next get your glue gun hot and ready.
  • Hot glue the paper flowers on the rim of the painted terra cotta pot, along with the horn in the inside.
  • Add more embellishments if need be.
  • To finish off the Terra Cotta Pot Unicorn – draw on eyes and nostrils with the black Sharpie marker.
  • Then stuff with some tissue paper and display/gift away proudly!!!

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use.
