Thumbprint Tic Tac Toe Valentine’s Card: ‘You Won My Heart’ Craft for Kids

A handmade valentine card kid craft featuring a tic-tac-toe grid with popsicle sticks, thumbprint hearts, red hearts, and "you won my heart!" on pastel paper. An ink pad and @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS handle are shown below.

Looking for a Valentine’s Day project that is equal parts adorable and entertaining? This “You Won My Heart” Thumbprint Tic Tac Toe card is the perfect solution. It combines the messy fun of finger painting with a classic game, resulting in a handmade keepsake that kids will be proud to give away.

Instead of a store-bought card that gets tossed in a drawer, this craft offers an interactive experience. Children can get creative with their own thumbprints to make the game pieces, transforming simple popsicle sticks and cardstock into a playable gift. It’s simple enough for little hands to manage but cute enough to melt any heart. Let’s get the paint out and start crafting a winner!

Materials Needed:

  • Popsicle sticks (4 per card)
  • Cardstock or thick paper (for the card base)
  • Washable paint (red, pink, or any Valentine’s colors)
  • A small paintbrush
  • Glue
  • Marker or pen
  • Optional: Decorative items like glitter, stickers, or ribbons

Steps:

  1. Create the Tic Tac Toe Grid:

    • If desired, take your 4 popsicle sticks and paint them in any color you like (e.g., red or pink). For our example image, I left ours blank.
    • Once dry, glue them onto the front of the card in a tic-tac-toe grid pattern (two vertical and two horizontal sticks).
  2. Make Thumbprint Hearts:

    • Dip your thumb into washable paint and press it onto the card at an angle.
    • Repeat with the same thumb, angling it the opposite way to form a heart shape.
    • Create several thumbprint hearts for the “O” pieces, while also drawing “X” on the board for the tic-tac-toe game.
  3. Add a Cute Message:

    • Write a fun Valentine’s Day message like “You Won My Heart!” on the card using a marker or pen.
  4. Decorate:

    • Add glitter, stickers, or ribbons to make the card extra special.
  5. Let It Dry:

    • Allow the card to dry completely before gifting it.
