By raiding your kitchen drawer for a potato masher, you add a cool waffle pattern to your art. Paired with classic Halloween colors like vibrant purple and spooky black, this craft is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages.
Materials You Will Need
To get started, gather these simple supplies:
- A metal or plastic potato masher (one with a grid or waffle pattern works best)
- Purple construction paper (or any fun Halloween color for the background)
- Black washable craft paint
- A paper plate (to hold the paint)
- Googly eyes (various sizes make the bats look extra goofy)
- White construction paper or cardstock
- A black permanent marker or crayon
- Kid-friendly scissors
- A glue stick or school glue
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep Your Paint Station
Squirt a generous amount of black craft paint onto your paper plate. Spread it around slightly so it is wide enough to fit the bottom of your potato masher.
Step 2: Stamp the Bats
Take your potato masher and dip the flat grid end into the black paint. Make sure the grid is evenly coated. Press the masher firmly onto your purple construction paper to create a textured, circular stamp. Repeat this process two or three times on the page to create a whole family of bats.
Step 3: Draw the Wings and Ears
Once the black paint dries completely, grab your black marker. Draw small, pointed ears on top of each stamped circle. Next, draw curved bat wings coming out of the sides of your black circles.
Step 4: Cut the Fangs
While you wait for the paint to dry, take your white paper and scissors. Cut out small white triangles to serve as the vampire fangs for your bats. You will need two triangles for each bat.
Step 5: Bring Your Bats to Life
Now it is time for the finishing touches. Glue two googly eyes onto the top half of each stamped circle. Then, glue two white fangs pointing downward near the bottom of the circle.
