Popsicle Stick & Cupcake Liner Butterfly Craft Idea

A craft tray with materials for coding label crafts: craft sticks, a black marker, orange cupcake liners, glue stick, red circle stickers, and a butterfly made from these items. @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS is noted at the bottom.

Looking for a simple and engaging spring craft? You can whip up these charming butterfly puppets in minutes using basic supplies you probably already have in your kitchen or craft drawer.

This project is perfect for keeping little hands busy, and it sparks plenty of imaginative play once the crafting is done. Whether you need a quick classroom activity or a fun weekend project at home, these colorful bugs are guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone’s face. We will show you exactly what you need and how to build these fluttery friends step by step!

What You Need:

You only need a few inexpensive materials to bring these butterflies to life:

  • Wooden popsicle sticks (standard or jumbo size)
  • Colorful cupcake liners
  • Round dot stickers (you need three for each butterfly)
  • A black permanent marker
  • Glue or double-sided tape

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Follow these simple steps to assemble your craft.

Step 1: Fold the Wings

Take one bright cupcake liner and fold it in half to create a semi-circle. Flatten it out slightly, but leave a little bit of volume so the wings look ready to take flight.

Step 2: Attach the Wings

Apply a generous dab of glue or a piece of double-sided tape to the back center of your popsicle stick. Press the folded cupcake liner firmly against the adhesive. Hold it there for a few seconds to ensure it stays in place.

Step 3: Build the Body

Grab three colorful dot stickers. Place them in a vertical line directly onto the front of the popsicle stick, right over the center of the wings. Overlap the stickers slightly as you move down the stick to form the butterfly’s segmented body.

Step 4: Draw the Details

Use your black marker to draw a happy little smiley face on the top dot sticker. Finally, draw two curvy antennae directly on the wooden stick, right above the butterfly’s head. Let the glue dry completely before playing.

Time to Play!

Your vibrant butterfly puppets are officially ready for their first flight around the living room or classroom!

This craft is incredibly customizable, so encourage the kids to mix and match different colored liners and stickers. Try setting up a puppet theater behind the couch so they can put on a show with their new creations.
