Finding a simple, engaging activity for an afternoon indoors does not have to be difficult. This paper plate and crepe paper frog craft is a perfect choice for parents, teachers, and childcare providers.
It requires just a few basic supplies you likely already have on hand, and it takes only minutes to set up. Kids love making these silly frogs, especially because they get to attach a long, bright red tongue. Let us gather our materials and get crafting!
Materials You Will Need
To build this friendly frog, pull together the following items:
- One green paper plate (or a white plate you can paint green)
- Light green construction paper
- Two large googly eyes
- Red crepe paper (streamer)
- A black marker
- Scissors
- School glue or a glue stick
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Frog Body
Take your green paper plate and cut it straight down the middle. You will use one half for the frog’s body. Place it flat on the table so the straight edge sits at the top and the curved edge rests at the bottom.
2. Assemble the Eyes
Cut two large circles out of the light green construction paper. Next, stick a large googly eye to the center of each green circle. Finally, glue these completed eyes to the top straight edge of your paper plate.
3. Draw a Big Smile
Grab your black marker and draw a wide, curved smile across the middle of the green plate. You can add small vertical tick marks at the ends of the smile to give your frog a bit more character.
4. Add the Long Tongue
Cut a long strip of red crepe paper. Apply a dot of glue to one end of the strip and attach it to the center of the drawn mouth. Let the crepe paper hang down. You can fold it over itself a bit to mimic a sticky, flexible frog tongue reaching out to catch a fly.
