Pandas are basically nature’s gift to craft time – those bold black-and-white faces are simple, striking, and endlessly fun to recreate. This project uses a humble potato masher dipped in white paint to stamp adorable textured panda faces onto colored paper. Finish them off with black dot stickers for the ears and noses, plus wiggly googly eyes, and you’ve got a craft that kids absolutely love.
This is a low-prep, high-fun activity that works beautifully at home, in the classroom, or at a craft party. The whole thing takes under 30 minutes, and cleanup is easy. Best of all, no artistic skill required – the potato masher does the hard work for you.
Craft Supplies:
Gather these materials before you begin:
- Purple construction paper (or any color your child loves)
- White washable paint (tempera paint works great)
- A potato masher – the grid or waffle-style head creates the perfect panda texture
- A shallow plate or tray for the paint
- Black dot stickers – you’ll need 6 per panda (2 ears + 1 nose × 3 pandas)
- Googly eyes – 2 per panda face
- A glue stick or craft glue for the googly eyes
- Paper towels for quick cleanups
Directions:
- Lay your purple construction paper vertically on your work surface. Go ahead and also squirt your white craft paint on the small paper plate.
- Press the head of the potato masher firmly into the paint tray, making sure the grid surface is evenly coated. Lift it straight up – don’t drag or twist it. If there’s too much paint pooling in the grid, blot it gently on a paper towel once.
- Press the loaded masher firmly and evenly onto the purple paper. Hold it still for two to three seconds, then lift it straight up without sliding. Don’t press too hard or rock the masher – a steady, flat press gives the cleanest print.
- Reload the masher with paint and stamp two more panda faces – one on the middle right and one on the lower left. This triangular arrangement fills the paper nicely and gives the composition a balanced, playful look.
- Let all three stamped circles dry for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on. Rushing this step smears the stickers and eyes.
- Take two black dot stickers and press them onto the top edge of each panda circle – one on the left side, one on the right. Position them so they sit half on the white circle and half above it, giving the classic rounded panda ear look.
- Press one black dot sticker onto the lower-center of each panda face to create the nose. Aim for just below the middle of the circle so it sits naturally between where the eyes will go and the bottom of the face.
- Add a small dot of glue above each nose, then press two googly eyes onto each panda face. Place them side by side, evenly spaced. Mix up the sizes if you have different options – mismatched eyes give the pandas a goofy, lovable personality.
- Let the glue dry completely before displaying or handling.

- Craft Paint
- Wiggle Eyes
- Dot Stickers
- Embellishments
- School Glue
Prepare your creative haven by laying down a protective cover before the crafting magic begins!
Directions:
- Pour the paint - Add a small puddle of bright green paint to a paper plate. The paint should be wide enough for the potato masher to dip into easily.
- Dip the potato masher - Press the bottom of the potato masher into the green paint. Gently lift it up and let any extra paint drip off, so the stamp doesn’t get too gloppy.
- Stamp the alien bodies - Press the painted potato masher onto the black construction paper. Lift it straight up to reveal a textured green alien body. Repeat to make as many aliens as you’d like.
- Let the paint dry - Set the paper aside until the green stamped shapes are dry. This helps the googly eyes and marker details stay neat.
- Add googly eyes - Glue one, two, or three googly eyes onto each green alien body. Mix them up to make every alien look different and extra silly.
- Draw alien details -Use markers to add antennae, arms, legs, smiles, or spacey little wiggles around each alien. Try different colors for a fun, playful look.
- Let dry completely - Your potato masher stamped aliens are ready for their space adventure. Display them on the fridge, classroom wall, or bulletin board for a blast of goofy galaxy fun!
