A colorful beach craft featuring a paper plate painted with blue swirls and glitter to resemble ocean waves, topped with a paper surfboard decorated with orange, green, and pink shapes. Two blue paint bottles are nearby.

Summer brings the perfect excuse for bright colors, warm days, and ocean themes. You can bring the beach right to your kitchen table with this Paint Splat Beach Wave Craft! It is a fantastic summer activity for young kids. They get to mix art, a little bit of messy play, and the magic of creating their own surfing scene.

Craft Supplies:

Before you start, gather the following supplies:

  • Surfboard Printable – from box.com password is GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS2026
  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Crayons, Markers or Coloring Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Large Paper Plate
  • 2-3 Colors of BLUE Tulip Puffy Paint
  • Loose Craft Glitter
  • Stapler
  • Embellishments

Pro Tip: Set up your painting station outdoors or use disposable tablecloths and aprons to manage the mess more easily.

Directions:

Lay down a protective covering on your table or floor to catch any stray splatters. If you’re doing this indoors, ensure paper towels or wet wipes are nearby for quick clean-ups.

  • Start by printing the free SURFBOARD printable (linked above) onto a single sheet of cardstock.
  • Color in ONE of the surfboard shapes however you like.
  • When done, carefully cut it out and set it aside for now.
  • Take a large paper plate and fold it in half.
  • Unfold the plate and add a few squiggles of fabric paint to one side. Be sure to keep the paint away from the edges – remember, less is more!
  • Fold the plate back in half and gently press it together, rubbing your hand across the surface to spread the paint evenly inside.
  • Open the plate to reveal a unique, symmetrical “beach wave” created by the paint splatter.
  • If you’d like, sprinkle some loose craft glitter over the wet paint for a touch of sparkle.
  • To complete your beach wave craft, staple the surfboard cutout onto the painted design.
  • Allow your creation to dry completely before displaying it proudly for everyone to admire!

Tips for Extra Fun:

  • Embrace the Mess: Kids love to squish the paint. Put an old newspaper down on the table so they can press on the plate without you worrying about spills.
  • Talk About the Ocean: While the paint dries, ask the kids what kinds of animals might live under their painted waves.
  • Add Fun Sayings: Help them write a fun, kid-friendly phrase on their surfboard before gluing it down. “Surf’s Up!” or “Wave Rider!” are perfect choices.
  • Experiment with Colors: Try using white or teal paint along with the blue to see how the ocean colors mix together when they open the plate.

Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible.
