Finding a quick and engaging craft for the little ones can sometimes be a challenge. Kids naturally love bugs, and parents appreciate projects that skip the hours of setup and cleanup.

This Easy Crepe Paper and Thumbprint Ants craft takes only five minutes from start to finish. It serves as the perfect afternoon activity for energetic kids at home or a wonderful art center idea for preschool teachers.

You only need a few basic supplies to bring this nature scene to life. Plus, it involves fingerprinting, which is an absolute favorite for young artists!

Craft Supplies:

Gather these simple supplies before you begin:

  • Green cardstock: This provides a sturdy background for your nature scene.
  • Brown crepe paper: Perfect for adding a crinkled, realistic bark texture.
  • Elmer’s School Glue: A washable, no-run formula works best for this project.
  • Washable paint or ink pad: Dark green or black works wonderfully for the ants.
  • Black marker: You need this to draw the delicate insect details.

Directions:

  • Start by tearing or cutting your brown crepe paper into a few short strips.
  • Grab your school glue and attach these strips horizontally across the green cardstock.
  • Arrange them in a staggered, zig-zag pattern from the top of the page to the bottom so they resemble fallen logs or tree branches.
  • Now comes the fun, slightly messy part. Have your child dip their thumb or index finger into the washable paint or ink.
  • Press the painted finger onto the cardstock, right along the crepe paper branches. To make a realistic ant shape, stamp three connected fingerprints in a row to represent the head, thorax, and abdomen.
  • Repeat this step to create a whole colony of busy ants marching across the paper.
  • Give the paint a few minutes to dry. Once it sets, take your black marker and bring your bugs to life. Draw thin little legs coming out of the middle fingerprint section.
  • Finally, add two tiny antennae to the front fingerprint of each ant.
  • Set your beautiful insect masterpiece aside to dry completely.
  • Once finished, it is ready to display on the refrigerator or your classroom bulletin board.

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
