Storytime gets a lot more fun when you add a hands-on activity. This coffee filter bear craft pairs perfectly with a reading of the classic fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Combining a great book with a simple art project helps children connect with the narrative, encourages their natural creativity, and gives them a wonderful prop for their own storytelling adventures.

You only need a few basic supplies to bring this adorable bear character to life. The crinkled texture of a standard coffee filter makes a fantastic, tactile face for the bear, while simple paper cutouts handle the rest.

Materials You Will Need

  • Brown coffee filters
  • Light purple construction paper (or any color you prefer for the background)
  • Brown kraft paper or construction paper
  • Large googly eyes
  • Black marker
  • Washable school glue
  • Kid-friendly scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the background. Lay your purple construction paper flat on the table. This serves as the sturdy base for your art project.
  2. Attach the face. Apply a generous circle of glue to the center of the purple paper. Press a single brown coffee filter flat into the glue and smooth it out.
  3. Cut out the features. Grab your brown paper and cut out two half-circles to use as the bear’s ears. Next, cut out one medium-sized oval to serve as the bear’s muzzle.
  4. Add the ears. Apply a small dab of glue to the bottom edge of the two half-circle ears. Tuck them slightly behind the top left and top right edges of the coffee filter, pressing down to secure them.
  5. Draw the smile. Use your black marker to draw a rounded triangle nose and a friendly “W” shaped mouth on the brown oval muzzle.
  6. Place the muzzle. Glue the completed muzzle onto the lower center of the coffee filter face.
  7. Bring it to life. Finish your bear by gluing two large googly eyes directly above the muzzle. Set the paper aside so the glue can dry completely.

Kids love seeing their favorite storybook characters take shape right at the kitchen table. This straightforward activity takes very little time to set up and provides a fantastic opportunity for children to practice their fine motor skills. Gather your supplies, open up a great book, and enjoy crafting these sweet bears together!
