Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to help kids show their appreciation with something handmade. Store-bought cards are nice, but nothing quite matches the charm of a personalized craft.
If you want a fun, meaningful project, this Paper Plate “I Love Mom Because” Flower Craft is exactly what you need. It combines simple materials with heartfelt messages, turning your child’s handprints into the colorful petals of a blooming flower. Each petal reveals a sweet, personal reason why they love their mom.
This craft is a wonderful way for kids to express their love, practice their fine motor skills, and create a keepsake that moms will cherish for years to come. Let us dive right into how you can make this beautiful handprint flower.
Craft Supplies:
- White Paper Plate – a small or standard size works perfectly
- Craft Paint – yellow for the center
- Paint Brush
- Cardstock Paper – grab an assortment of bright colors like pink, blue, orange, purple, and red
- Black Marker/Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue or Stapler – to attach the handprints to the paper plate
Directions:
- Start by creating the bright center of your flower. Have your child paint the inside circle of the paper plate yellow. They can paint a solid yellow circle, or paint radiating lines stretching outward to look like sun rays. Set the plate aside in a safe spot to dry completely.
- While you wait for the paint to dry, move on to the petals. Take your colorful construction paper and have your child place their hand flat on each sheet. Use a pencil to carefully trace their handprint. You will need about five or six handprints to create a full flower, depending on the size of the plate and the child’s hands. Once traced, help your child cut out each handprint with their scissors.
- Now comes the sweetest part of the project. Take your dried, yellow-painted paper plate. Use your black marker to write “I Love Mom Because…” right in the center.
- Next, grab the colorful handprint petals. On each handprint, ask your child to write down one reason why they love their mom. If your child is too young to write, you can ask them the question out loud and transcribe their answers onto the paper hands for them.
- It is time to put everything together. Apply a line of glue along the bottom edge of the paper plate, or use a stapler for a faster, more secure hold. Arrange the handprints around the outer edge of the plate, overlapping them slightly so they fan out just like the petals of a real flower. Make sure the written messages face upward so Mom can read them easily.
- At this point in time you can add any other embellishments you see fit.
- When done decorating, allow it to dry completely before displaying and/or gifting away proudly.
