Sparkle into the New Year with a DIY Wishing Wand Kids Can Make!

New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to reflect on the year gone by and dream big for the year ahead—and for kids, it’s an especially magical occasion. What better way to channel that excitement than with a fun and creative craft project?

Enter today’s “New Year’s Eve Wishing Wand” tutorial—a delightful DIY activity kids will love, blending creativity, imagination, and a sprinkle of sparkle. These wands are not only a great way to keep little hands busy but also a meaningful tool to help kids think about their goals and wishes for the new year.

Craft Supplies:

Before starting this craft, make sure you’ve gathered these easy-to-find materials (most of which you might already have at home):

  • White Cardstock Paper
  • STAR WAND Printable – on our landing page
  • Crayons/Markers
  • Scissors
  • Crepe Paper {several different colors}
  • Wavy Popsicle Stick – one per wand
  • Stapler
  • Embellishments

Having all your materials ready beforehand will make the crafting process smoother and more enjoyable. Plus, it allows kids to focus on the fun part—creating their wishing wands!

Directions:

  • First things first – print out the blank STAR template, listed above, on a single sheet of white cardstock paper. You only need ONE print per wand craft.
  • Next up – color/decorate the printable however you choose. I did several lines of school glue and loose craft glitter on top, on my example image. You can of course change it up. You could even have children write their goals {or wishes} for the new year, in the blank areas. So many ways to take this craft idea to the next level!
  • When done, trim it out and discard excess paper.
  • Now grab your crepe paper and tear/cut off five to six long stripes.
  • The final step for this wand craft is to staple the various crepe paper pieces to the bottom of the decorated star cutout and then staple that combination to one end of your wavy popsicle stick. You should be able to hold the other end and the star stay in place.
  • Add any other embellishments you see fit and then “wave” your sparkly piece all over to give it the appearance that it is flying through the air.
