Apple Scented Play Dough Recipe - Perfect For Autumn!

Get creative in the kitchen with this easy Apple Scented Play Dough recipe! Whether you’re looking for family fun or a sweet-smelling craft, this homemade play dough is perfect to get your kids excited and entertained!

Homemade playdough offers a world of benefits. Not only is it cheaper than store-bought versions, but it also allows for customization. You can adjust the texture, color, and scent to create a truly unique sensory experience.

Plus, the process of making playdough is a fun and educational activity in itself, teaching kids about measurements and the science of combining ingredients.

Playdough Ingredients:

To make this apple scented play dough, you will need a few basic ingredients. Most of these items are likely already in your kitchen, making this a convenient and quick project to start. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/4 cup table salt
  • 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup warm water
  • Red food coloring

One of the best parts of making homemade playdough is involving your kids in the process. Allow them to help measure ingredients, mix colors, and knead the dough. This not only makes the activity more enjoyable but also teaches valuable life skills.

Directions:

Creating your apple scented play dough is simple and can be done in a few easy steps. Follow this guide to ensure your play dough turns out perfectly every time.

  • Add your dry ingredients to a medium sized pot.
  • Use a cooking spoon to mix everything together.
  • Now add in your tap water, a few drops of red food coloring & the vegetable oil.
  • Stir with the cooking spoon again until well combined.
  • Cook play dough mixture over medium heat until the dough pulls away from pot and starts to become dry.
  • Turn off the heat on the stove and let the play dough mixture cool.
  • When cool enough to touch, knead the dough with your hands until it becomes a smooth play dough consistency. If your playdough is too sticky, add a bit more flour. If the dough is too dry and crumbly, add a small amount of water and knead until smooth. Knead it in small amounts until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Then play with your apple scented playdough however you like!
  • Store in air tight container after playing.

Fun Ways To Play:

  • Use cookie cutters shaped like leaves and apples to create fall-themed playdough art. This is a great way to discuss the changing seasons with your kids.
  • Encourage your kids to make “apple pies” using mini pie tins and their imagination. They can roll out the dough, fill the “pie,” and even create lattice tops.
  • Add different textures to your playdough by pressing in natural materials like pinecones, acorns, or leaves. This adds a whole new sensory dimension to playtime.

To keep your playdough fresh and pliable, store it in an airtight container or ziplock bag. If it starts to dry out, simply add a few drops of water and knead it until it returns to its original texture.

And one last tip – once your child is done playing, store play dough in an air-tight container. Please always supervise young children while they play. While all the ingredients may be safe for children to eat – it won’t taste good and can become a choking hazard!

Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible.
