Coffee Filter Gnome Puppet Craft Idea

A children’s book titled How to Catch a Garden Gnome sits on patterned paper, next to a handmade paper gnome with a plaid hat and round nose. The handle @GLUETOMYCRAFTS appears at the bottom.

Create a simple and adorable coffee filter gnome puppet with just a few basic craft supplies. This quick craft takes only a few minutes to make, and you likely already have most of the materials in your kitchen or craft bin. Kids will love turning everyday coffee filters into playful characters they can enjoy during creative play!

Materials You Will Need

  • Standard round coffee filters (white or natural tan)
  • Patterned cardstock or scrapbook paper (plaid, stars, or solid colors)
  • Light brown or tan cardstock (for the nose)
  • Jumbo wooden craft sticks (popsicle sticks)
  • School glue or a stapler
  • Kid-friendly scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep the Beard: Take one coffee filter and fold it in half to create a semi-circle. This forms the fluffy beard of your gnome. For a fun, textured look, use scissors to cut small vertical slits along the bottom curved edge of the filter to create a fringed effect.
  2. Cut the Hat: Pick out a fun patterned paper. Cut a tall, pointed triangle to serve as the gnome’s hat.
  3. Make the Nose: Cut a small oval shape from the tan cardstock. This will be the gnome’s signature big nose.
  4. Assemble the Puppet: Glue or staple the top straight edge of the folded coffee filter to the bottom edge of your triangle hat.
  5. Add the Details: Glue the oval nose right in the center. Position it so it overlaps the bottom of the hat and the top of the coffee filter beard.
  6. Attach the Handle: Glue the top half of a jumbo wooden craft stick to the back of the coffee filter. Leave the bottom half sticking out so little hands can hold it easily. Let the glue dry completely before playing.

A festive flat lay featuring July 4th children’s books, a star-spangled gnome craft with a paper cup hat, striped paper, and a round “July 4” sign. The handle @GLUEDTOMYCRAFTS is visible.

You can easily adapt this craft for any holiday, season, or theme. Use red, white, and blue star-patterned paper for a festive Fourth of July gnome. Swap in black and white buffalo check paper for a rustic garden gnome. You can also let kids use markers or watercolors to dye plain white coffee filters before assembling their puppets.

Grab your craft supplies and your favorite storybook to start building your own little gnome family. This hands-on activity offers an excellent way to combine reading with creative play.
