Crafting is not just about creating beautiful end products; it’s an opportunity to engage kids in activities that build their creativity, improve fine motor skills, and nurture patience. One easy and fun project that checks all these boxes is today’s “torn paper watermelon” craft!

Perfect for summer, Valentine’s Day or as part of a food or color-themed activity, this colorful piece of art is delightful for kids of all ages.

Plus, it only requires a few affordable supplies you may already have at home. Follow this step-by-step guide to keep little fingers busy while encouraging imagination and creativity!

Craft Supplies:

Here’s what you’ll need for your torn paper watermelon craft:

  • “MELON” PRINTABLE – from our landing page
  • White Cardstock Paper
  • Light Pink {or red} Construction Paper
  • School Glue or Glitter Glue
  • Black Coding Labels {or a black ink pad}
  • Embellishments

These materials are inexpensive and readily available. If you don’t have construction paper, feel free to use magazine pages, gift wrapping paper, or even old catalogs. Mix and match textures for extra fun!

Directions:

  • First download and print out the FREE you are one in a MELON printable listed above, on a single piece of white cardstock paper.
  • Have kids color in the “rind” completely green. They can use a crayon, marker, coloring pencil etc.
  • Now help your child cut/tear their sheet of construction paper into small pieces.
  • Grab the school glue and help them put a good amount of it in the center of the watermelon slice design.
  • Have children place their paper pieces on top of the glue {adding more if needed} until it’s is completely filled in.
  • The final step is to add a few black coding labels {the seeds} to tie the theme together. They can also add wiggle eyes if they choose.
  • And just like that, your Torn Paper “You Are One In A Melon” craft is complete! Set aside to let it all dry completely before displaying/gifting your child’s handmade watermelon slice card proudly!
