DIY Handprint Turkey Potholder - Thanksgiving Kid Craft

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a handmade craft! Create lasting memories with your family this season by making this adorable DIY handprint turkey potholder!

If gifting it to someone for the season, throw in some cooking utensils and a cookbook for them to enjoy as well!

Craft Supplies:

  • Fabric Potholder
  • Fabric Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Baby Wipes
  • Small Paper Plate
  • Trash Bags/Newspapers

Directions:

  • First lay your potholder on a flat surface, on top of some clean, trash bags or newspapers. This is to protect your work surface!
  • Pick a hand – any hand.
  • Squirt some paint on your paper plate.
  • Paint the palm of your child’s hand completely with the fabric paint.
  • Working fast, press down the WET painted hand, in the center of the potholder. Really squish down each finger and give them a wiggle so the paint transfers.
  • Now carefully lift up the hand to reveal the handprint design underneath.
  • Go ahead and use baby wipes {and a quick trip to the sink} to clean off excess paint from their hand.
  • Next up – grab your remaining paint and draw on turkey embellishments on the painted handprint design, to give it life!
  • Once done, let the paint dry completely before using or storing your potholder!

{I recommend hand-washing these so they are good to go for years to come!}

You can also do this idea with large cloth napkins instead!!! Just follow the same steps above but be sure to lay out your napkins on a flat surface, so the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side.

Craft Activity Safety Guidelines:

Always Ensure Adult Supervision - Young children should be supervised at all times when engaging in craft activities. This is essential to keep them safe and ensure materials are used correctly. Use Age-Appropriate Supplies - Choose craft supplies that are suitable for your child’s age. Check labels for recommendations and avoid items with small parts or sharp edges for younger children. Modify as Needed - Feel free to adapt materials or steps to meet your child's abilities and safety needs. For example, substitute scissors with safety scissors if necessary. Keep an Eye on Allergies - Be mindful of potential allergens in craft materials like glue, paint, or certain fabrics. Opt for non-toxic and hypoallergenic options whenever possible. Organize and Secure Supplies - Keep all craft tools and materials organized. Store sharp objects, small parts, and potentially hazardous items out of reach when not in use. Following these guidelines will ensure that crafts remain fun, creative, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved!
