Get fun and festive with this “outside the traditional” Paper Plate Octopus Santa kid craft idea!
Keep scrolling to see how I made this bearded octopus tutorial come to life, after finding some silver & white curling ribbon at my local Dollar Tree store!
For me, every tutorial I share on Glued To My Crafts usually starts off from something very unexpected.
This time, our Paper Plate Octopus Santa craft idea started coming together after I picked up some silver and white curling ribbon from my local Dollar Tree store. As I held it in my hands, I couldn’t stop thinking of Santa’s beard. Yes, I know – weird! Don’t ask me how {because I’m even puzzling to myself sometimes!} but after thinking of our octopus witch version from this past Halloween, I just couldn’t resist sharing a similar project but for Christmas this time.
And boy am I glad I did! Because surprisingly – what I envisioned in my head, really did come to life and I hope you like it too! The curling ribbon as the “beard” of the octopus Santa doubles as the tentacles too. I think it’s pretty “clever.”
So what are you waiting for? Don’t swim away just yet! Let’s JUMP to it and make a one-of-a-kind paper octopus and curling ribbon beard piece to change up your traditional Christmas craft plans! All the details can be found below, in the full tutorial. I really do hope you inspired to recreate this “outside the norm” Santa inspired craft idea!
Happy crafting, my dear friends!!! Please don’t forget to share pictures of your finished octopus Santa creations with us on our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram. I can’t wait to see your bearded octopus creations! #gluedtomycrafts

Octopus Santa Craft Supplies:
- Small Paper Plate {one per octopus Santa craft}
- Green Craft Paint
- Foam Paint Brush
- Paper Craft Scissors
- Red Construction Paper
- White Construction Paper
- School Glue
- Silver/White Curling Ribbon
- Hand-Held Office Stapler
- Large Wiggle Eyes {two per octopus craft}
- optional embellishments like holiday stickers, glitter glue, rhinestones etc.
Directions:
- First things first – grab your small paper plate, green craft paint and foam paint brush.
- Squirt some green paint in the center of the plate and move it around with the paint brush, until the paper plate is completely covered.
- When done painting, set the paper plate aside to allow it to dry a bit.
- While that is drying, grab all your paper sheets & scissors.
- Cut out a simple triangle shaped hat from the red and follow that up with the white “embellishments” for the top & rim.
- Glue all those pieces together and discard excess paper.
- When the painted paper plate is dry enough to touch, grab it, along with the paper hat, curling ribbon, your stapler and two wiggle eyes.
- Start off by stapling your curling ribbon “beard” to the back of the paper plate. You just want it hanging off the edge slightly, so it looks like octopus tentacles.
- Follow that up by stapling on the paper Santa hat, to the other side of the painted paper plate.
- Finally, to finish the paper plate octopus Santa, add the wiggle eyes to the front of the plate, so it can see.
- Add any other embellishments you see fit.
- Now display it proudly for ALL to see!
- Don’t forget to share pictures of what you created just now, on your various social media sites! #gluedtomycrafts
