The How To:
- First things first – we are going to start working on painting the canvas. This way, while the paint is drying, we can work on the vinyl cutouts. Make sure you have a good working area for the painting step. A trash bag laid out flat on your work-space is great for easy cleanup and less mess!
- So on that note, grab your large blank canvas, your craft paint, foam brushes and the paper plate.
- Lay the canvas on a flat surface.
- Squirt your two shades of paint colors on the paper plate.
- Place one paint brush in each dollop of paint.
- Have your child start the craft by painting the entire canvas in front of them, completely gray. No white would be seen. This will be the start of your Halloween night scene.
- Allow the paint to dry a little after they are done. If need be – a hair dryer on a low setting can speed up the drying process.
- Next up – painting on the moon. Have them take their paint brush with the yellow paint and draw a HUGE circle in the center of the canvas. It doesn’t need to be a perfect circle 🙂 Have them add as much or as little paint, as they like.
- When done with the painting, set the canvas aside to allow the paint to dry completely.

- Next up -we are going to cut ALL of our vinyl pieces out, using the Cricut Maker. Go ahead and get your machine ready, as well as your app on your device.
- In your Cricut Design Space app, you are going to start a new project, hit add image and type in “bat” in the search bar. There are several different options to choose from in the app but we decided to go with Bat #MC2B811F Happy Halloween Iron On Designs {feel free to use whatever bat design you like – there are tons to choose from. Just remember to get your child’s input since it’s their creation.}
- I then resized the bat graphic on my mat, to 8 inches wide but you can make your bat shape any size you like. Like I mentioned in the beginning, this craft is very forgiving on the steps. The size of your cutout will depend on the size of your canvas. You obviously don’t want it bigger than your canvas piece. Just keep in mind to leave room for your words on the bottom but also be sure to make the bat design large enough to cover a good portion of their painted moon.
- When you have it the size you want, go ahead and load your mat with your black vinyl {shiny side up} and hit cut.
- Once the machine is done doing it’s thing, hit unload, weed the design out and pull it off the mat. Set it aside.
- Next is the wording. we decided to use a premade Halloween saying but you can of course change this up as well. We choose “Halloween Badge #MA1989E5 Halloween Phrases” for the phrase and resized it to 4 inches on the screen.
- Once again, you will load up your mat with more black vinyl and hit cut on the machine.
- Unload the mat and weed out the final vinyl piece.
- Next, working in sections, you are going to start adhering your vinyl cutouts to the painted canvas.
- Lay a piece of transfer tape over each vinyl piece you just made.
- Use the scraper to rub the tape onto the vinyl.
- Peel the vinyl away from the liner at a 45-degree angle. If the vinyl sticks to the liner, simply rub the transfer tape onto the vinyl again, then continue to peel the vinyl away from the liner.
- Once the two designs are on the transfer tape, lay them both in their designated spots on the canvas. The vinyl bat design should be in the center of the moon, while the words will go in one of the corners, to tie it all together.
- Be sure to use your Cricut scraper to make sure the vinyl is really stuck to the canvas before you peel away the transfer tape. For good measure, once the transfer tape is removed, go over the vinyl cutouts one more time with the scraper.
- Finally – the last step! Take a small amount of fake spider webs and carefully wrap them around the finished canvas. This will give it that “eerie” feel and give it some dimension, as well. When we did this step, I liked how it gave the look of fog around our painted moon.
- And that’s it! At this point in time, you can add anything else you see fit. Maybe you feel like it’s missing something or just you want to add a few personal touches. Go for it!
- Once you have everything in place and you like how your Halloween Night Decor Piece looks, you are ready to either display or gift it away proudly!
- Whatever you decide to do with it, don’t forget to snap a few pictures to share with us! #gluedtomycrafts #cricutcreated
