Simplest Where’s Waldo Costume Idea For Literacy Week
This week was literacy week at my son’s school and we had “Dress As Your Favorite Book Character” day.
Since I came up with a quick outfit for him to wear that particular day, I wanted to share with you all this FAST and CHEAP “Waldo” costume idea you can recreate on the fly as well!
Because you are like me, you need it to be as easy as 1-2-3!
Since my son has started school, we have had this “favorite book character costume” challenge come up a few times now {last year was Pete The Cat}
And being the “crafty” mom that I am – we HAVE TO come with up with a DIY idea to show off. Only problem is, this crafty mom tends to be “kinda” cheap and lazy, waiting till the last minute to pull something together. I really don’t like spending a lot of time or money on a costume that would literally be worn for only a few hours. But I like the idea of having something made by hand – go figure!
So after surfing through some ideas online and raiding my son’s closet, I was able to come up with this “Where’s Waldo Costume” with little to no effort {other than finding a red hat in hot sunny Florida, two days before the big event!}
Anyways – if you are looking for an crafty and easy DIY for Literacy Week, may I suggest this Where’s Waldo costume idea? All you need is a red and white striped shirt, a red hat, white yarn, a pom pom maker and some plastic/fake glasses.
For my version of the iconic waldo hat, I simply made a large white pom pom and attached it to a simple red fleece hat with a needle & thread. This cost me maybe $5 total to make. Walmart did have a stripped red/white fleece hat but they wanted $12 for it {name brand team logo hat – no thanks} Instead I was able to grab a $3 hat from the women’s section and make it work. Score!
The glasses I just so happened to find in the Valentine’s Day stuff as a party favor. All I did was remove the plastic inserts. I thought about spray painting them black {like Waldo} but decided to skip that step.
As for the the striped shirt, I believe it’s from Children’s place and we have had it for awhile now. But I do believe you could DIY this as well or find something online already made.
The other elements – blue jeans and sneakers. Nothing elaborate, especially since this little boy likes it’s simple 🙂

Best part? Although everything he is wearing in these pictures is a “costume” for literacy week, everything can go right back into our closet with ease and be worn later again {like cutting off the pom pom from the hat and moving it to my closet instead lol!}
I hope you are inspired by this quick Waldo outfit idea! Remember – it doesn’t have to be exact either. It’s just a matter of envisioning the idea!
Happy crafting my friends! If you can, please share pictures of your adorable children in their handmade Waldo costume on the big day, so I can see them from a far! I would really make my day! Just tag us on Facebook or Instagram for easy sharing! Thank you! #gluedtomycrafts
