Although we just put up our large holiday tree this past weekend, it wasn’t the first one in our home this season. Shocker! We actually MADE this wood Christmas tree for lil man! Yes – you read that right. We MADE IT!!!
You see – I did something “tricky.” My husband told me “NO” Christmas stuff up until after Thanksgiving {he’s VERY stern about this!}
I “somewhat” agreed to that rule BUT had something up my crafty sleeve. Oh the story of the girl behind Glued To My Crafts…
So two weekends ago I made it my mission, to cross a craft project off my to-do list.
After some much debating in my head on how to make it happen, I gathered all the supplies needed for a small wood Christmas tree. My goal was to have something kid friendly for my curious toddler, as well as something cute & portable. It needed to be something that can make it through the years and possibly several more moves in the military. Hence – why it’s made out of wood.
While setting up the supplies on our dining room table, I told my husband that I needed his help. No questions asked – he helped. He did the trimming of the wood and I did the painting afterwards. After an hour of our time, we had a kid friendly Christmas tree for Lil Man. {And shhh….I “secretly” had our first piece of Christmas in the house too!}
Now believe it or not – this tree is really easy to recreate! If you have scrap wood laying around, you are well on your way to making your own. However, I did cheat a little and buy the wood pre-cut from Michaels. But looking back – it probably would have been cheaper to just raid our garage for the wood. We probably could have been made our tree even bigger if we had! Live and learn – right?!
With our new tree, I just love how my son can decorate and undecorate without me freaking out. It’s his creative juices and ultimately HIS tree.
Are you ready to learn how we did it? Keep scrolling for the full WOOD CHRISTMAS TREE TUTORIAL below! Then when you recreate it for your toddler, come share pictures on our Facebook page – wink wink!
Happy crafting, my friends! #gluedtomycrafts

Pretend Wood Christmas Tree Craft Supplies:
* Various Pieces/Sizes of Wood
* Tools to trim wood
* Green Craft Paint
* Paint Brush
* Wood Glue
* Hanging Hooks
* Felt Ornaments {I found these at Michaels but you can them yourself}

Directions:
1. First decided how large you want to make your wooden tree to be. Trim your wood pieces to make a staggering tree shape. Start from small to large. Lay it out to make sure you have the look you want. We used a thin piece of wood for the stem and center of the tree. Use our picture for an example {please keep in mind, everyone’s tree & measurements will be a different size since we all will most likely use different materials – sorry that I didn’t include those in this tutorial!}
2. Now paint your wood pieces completely green. Set them aside to let them dry completely.
3. Next, using clamps and some wood glue – glue your wood tree pieces together. Set aside in an undisturbed area until completely dry.
4. While everything is drying, if you need to, string your felt ornaments for easy hanging {psst – I put all the ornaments in a fun box for lil man too!}
5. Once the wood glue is dry and your tree is stable enough – screw in or glue on your wooden hooks in random places on the front of the tree shape. Keep in mind how the ornaments will be placed and don’t make the hooks too high or low for your child. You should also add a way to the back of your tree for hanging it. We drilled a hole in ours so we could place it on a nail but a picture frame hook on the back would work too!
6. Now for the fun part – displaying it! Hang your tree in a desired location where your child can reach it safely. Hand over the felt ornaments for decorating and let them go to town!
7. Then admire your hard work and happy child ;) When the season is over, just store away the wood Christmas tree for the next year!
